The oldest city on the Volga River, founded by Yaroslav – the Wise in the beginning of the 10th century. According to legend, when Prince Yaroslav took interest in establishing new city local clans responded by setting a sacred bear to attack him. Yaroslav killed the bear with his axe and founded a town on the spot, putting both the bear and his weapon on its coat of arms.
